In our third Insight episode, Kurt Smithgall, formally of S20 Design, takes us into the fast-flowing world of whitewater-park design or, to borrow a phrase from Kurt - “recreational hydraulics” - stuff like this.
Kurt gives us an insight into how CFD is helping in the design of whitewater parks & some of the challenges therein - including:
- mitigating the risk of building a water park that doesn’t work
- dealing with uncertainty in geometry & flow conditions
- scale - both in terms of the mesh/physics, but also the length of the transient simulations
- the importance of domain expertise & whether you need to be a paddler to do this job
- the future - mixing CFD post-pro & virtual reality to “paddle” features before they’ve even been built
